Atthefootofthehillbeyondthebridgebeginsaroadway,plantedwithyoungaspens,thatleadsinastraightlinetothefirsthousesintheplace.These,fencedinbyhedges,areinthemiddleofcourtyardsfullofstragglingbuildings,wine-presses,cart-shedsanddistilleriesscatteredunderthicktrees,withladders,poles,orscytheshungontothebranches.Thethatchedroofs,likefurcapsdrawnovereyes,reachdownoveraboutathirdofthelowwindows,whosecoarseconvexglasseshaveknotsinthemiddlelikethebottomsofbottles.
