           Webecameverycuriousonthismatter,themoresothatweobservedthesefootprintstoliescatteredaboutinonelocality,asiftheanimalwhichhadmadethemwaswanderingroundaboutinaveryirregularmannerandwithoutanyobjectinview.Earlyintheforenoonofourthirddayweobservedthesefootprintstobemuchmorenumerousthanever,andinoneparticularspottheydivergedoffintothewoodsinaregularbeatentrack,whichwas,however,socloselybesetwithbushesthatwepushedthroughitwithdifficulty.Wehadnowbecomesoanxioustofindoutwhatanimalthiswas,andwhereitwentto,thatwedeterminedtofollowthetrackand,ifpossible,clearupthemystery.Peterkinsaid,inabanteringtone,thathewassureitwouldbeclearedup,asusual,insomefrightfullysimpleway,andprovetobenomysteryatall!

           Thebeatentrackseemedmuchtoolargetohavebeenformedbytheanimalitself,andweconcludedthatsomelargeranimalhadmadeit,andthatthesmalleronemadeuseofit.Buteverywherethecreepingplantsandtangledbushescrossedourpath,sothatweforcedourwayalongwithsomedifficulty.Suddenly,aswecameuponanopenspace,weheardafaintcry,andobservedablackanimalstandinginthetrackbeforeus.

           "Awildcat!"criedJack,fittinganarrowtohisbow,anddischargingitsohastilythathemissedtheanimal,andhittheearthabouthalf-a-foottoonesideofit.Tooursurprise,thewildcatdidnotfly,butwalkedslowlytowardsthearrowandsnuffedatit.
