           Jackthoughtitmighthavebeenblownupbyavolcano;andPeterkinsaidhethoughtitmusthavejumpedupofitsownaccord!Wealsonoticed,whathadescapedusbefore,thatthesolidrocksofwhichtheislandwasformedwerequitedifferentfromthelivecoralrocksontheshore,where,thewonderfullittleinsectswerecontinuallyworking.Theyseemed,indeed,tobeofthesamematerialasubstancelikelimestone;butwhilethecoralrockswerequitefullofminutecellsinwhichtheinsectslived,theotherrocksinlandwerehardandsolid,withouttheappearanceofcellsatall.OurthoughtsandconversationsonthissubjectweresometimessoprofoundthatPeterkinsaidweshouldcertainlygetdrownedinthematlast,evenalthoughweweresuchgooddivers!Nevertheless,wedidnotallowhispleasantryonthisandsimilarpointstodeterusfrommakingournotesandobservationsaswewentalong.

           Wefoundseveralmoredrovesofhogsinthewoods,butabstainedfromkillinganyofthem,havingmorethansufficientforourpresentnecessities.Wesaw,also,manyoftheirfootprintsinthisneighbourhood.Amongthesewealsoobservedthefootprintsofasmalleranimal,whichweexaminedwithmuchcare,butcouldformnocertainopinionastothem.Peterkinthoughttheywerethoseofalittledog,butJackandIthoughtdifferently.
