Thisvalley,likethefirst,wasalsofullofrichtrees—somedarkandsomelightgreen,someheavyandthickinfoliage,andotherslight,feathery,andgraceful,whilethebeautifulblossomsonmanyofthemthrewasortofrainbowtintoverall,andgavetothevalleytheappearanceofagardenofflowers.Amongthesewerecognisedmanyofthebread-fruittrees,ladenwithyellowfruit,andalsoagreatmanycocoa-nutpalms.Aftergazingourfillwepusheddownthehillside,crossedthevalley,andsoonbegantoascendthesecondmountain.Itwasclothedwithtreesnearlytothetop;butthesummitwasbare,andinsomeplacesbroken.
Whileonourwayupwecametoanobjectwhichfilleduswithmuchinterest.Thiswasthestumpofatreethathadevidentlybeencutdownwithanaxe!So,then,wewerenotthefirstwhohadviewedthisbeautifulisle.Thehandofmanhadbeenatworktherebeforeus.Itnowbegantorecurtousagainthatperhapstheislandwasinhabited,althoughwehadnotseenanytracesofmanuntilnow.Butasecondglanceatthestumpconvincedusthatwehadnotmorereasontothinksonowthanformerly;forthesurfaceofthewoodwasquitedecayedandpartlycoveredwithfungusandgreenmatter,sothatitmusthavebeencutmanyyearsago.
