Thefruit,withwhichitwasloaded,wasnearlyround,andappearedtobeaboutsixinchesindiameter,witharoughrind,markedwithlozenge-shapeddivisions.Itwasofvariouscolours,fromlightpea-greentobrownandrichyellow.Jacksaidthattheyellowwastheripefruit.Weafterwardsfoundthatmostofthefruit-treesontheislandwereevergreens,andthatwemight,whenwewished,plucktheblossomandtheripefruitfromthesametree.Suchawonderfuldifferencefromthetreesofourowncountrysurprisedusnotalittle.Thebarkofthetreewasroughandlight-coloured;thetrunkwasabouttwofeetindiameter,anditappearedtobetwentyfeethigh,beingquitedestituteofbranchesuptothatheight,whereitbranchedoffintoabeautifulandumbrageoushead.Wenoticedthatthefruithunginclustersoftwosandthreesonthebranches;butaswewereanxioustogettothetopofthehill,werefrainedfromattemptingtopluckanyatthattime.
Ourheartswerenowverymuchcheeredbyourgoodfortune,anditwaswithlightandactivestepsthatweclamberedupthesteepsidesofthehill.Onreachingthesummitanew,andifpossibleagrander,prospectmetourgaze.Wefoundthatthiswasnotthehighestpartoftheisland,butthatanotherhilllaybeyond,withawidevalleybetweenitandtheoneonwhichwestood.
