Imustconfessthatmyheartcondemnedmewhiletheteacherspokeinthisearnestmanner,andIknewnotwhattoreply.Peterkin,too,didnotseemtolikeit,and,Ithought,wouldwillinglyhaveescaped.ButJackseemeddeeplyimpressed,andworeananxiousexpressiononhisnaturallygravecountenance,whileheassentedtotheteacher’sremarks,andputtohimmanyearnestquestions.Meanwhilethenativeswhocomposedourcrew,havingnothingparticulartodo,hadsquatteddownonthedeckandtakenouttheirlittlebookscontainingthetranslatedportionsoftheNewTestament,alongwithhymnsandspelling-books,andwerenowbusilyengaged—somevociferatingthealphabet,otherslearningprayersoffbyheart,whileafewsanghymns—allofthembeingutterlyunmindfulofourpresence.Theteachersoonjoinedthem,andsoonafterwardstheyallengagedinaprayer,whichwasafterwardstranslatedtous,andprovedtobeapetitionforthesuccessofourundertakingandfortheconversionoftheheathen.
