Wemannedherwithnatives,andhopedtooverawethesavagesbydisplayingourbrassguntoadvantage.Theteachersoonaftercameonboard,andsettingoursails,weputtosea.Intwohoursmorewemadethecliffsreverberatewiththecrashofthebiggun,whichwefiredbywayofsalute,whilewerantheBritishensignuptothepeakandcastanchor.Thecommotiononshoreshowedusthatwehadstruckterrorintotheheartsofthenatives;butseeingthatwedidnotoffertomolestthem,acanoeatlengthputoffandpaddledcautiouslytowardsus.Theteachershowedhimself,andexplainingthatwewerefriendsandwishedtopalaverwiththechief,desiredthenativetogoandtellhimtocomeonboard.
Wewaitedlongandwithmuchimpatienceforananswer.Duringthistimethenativeteacherconversedwithusagain,andtoldusmanythingsconcerningthesuccessoftheGospelamongthoseislands;andperceivingthatwewerebynomeanssomuchgratifiedasweoughttohavebeenatthehearingofsuchgoodnews,hepressedusmorecloselyinregardtoourpersonalinterestinreligion,andexhortedustoconsiderthatoursoulswerecertainlyinasgreatdangerasthoseofthewretchedheathenwhomwepitiedsomuchifwehadnotalreadyfoundsalvationinJesusChrist.
