Whenweconsider,"addedthemissionary,"thesmallnessofthearchitectsusedbyourheavenlyFatherinordertoformthoselovelyandinnumerableislands,wearefilledwithmuchofthatfeelingwhichinducedtheancientkingtoexclaim,‘Howmanifold,OLord,areThyworks!inwisdomhastThoumadethemall.’"
Weallheartilyagreedwiththemissionaryinthissentiment,andfeltnotalittlegratifiedtofindthattheopinionswhichJackandIhadbeenledtoform,frompersonalobservationonourCoralIsland,werethustoagreatextentcorroborated.
ThemissionaryalsogaveusanaccountofthemannerinwhichChristianityhadbeenintroducedamongthem.Hesaid:"Whenmissionarieswerefirstsenthere,threeyearsago,asmallvesselbroughtthem;andthechief,whoisnowdead,promisedtotreatwellthetwonativeteacherswhowereleftwiththeirwivesontheisland.Butscarcelyhadtheboatwhichlandedthemreturnedtotheshipthanthenativesbegantomaltreattheirguests,takingawayalltheypossessed,andofferingthemfurtherviolence,sothatwhentheboatwassentinhastetofetchthemaway,theclothesofbothmenandwomenweretornnearlyofftheirbacks.
