Theislandonwhichwestoodwashilly,andcoveredalmosteverywherewiththemostbeautifulandrichlycolouredtrees,bushes,andshrubs,noneofwhichIknewthenamesofatthattime—except,indeed,thecocoa-nutpalms,whichIrecognisedatoncefromthemanypicturesthatIhadseenofthembeforeIlefthome.Asandybeachofdazzlingwhitenesslinedthisbright-greenshore,anduponittherefellagentlerippleofthesea.Thislastastonishedmemuch,forIrecollectedthatathometheseausedtofallinhugebillowsontheshorelongafterastormhadsubsided.Butoncastingmyglanceouttoseathecausebecameapparent.AboutamiledistantfromtheshoreIsawthegreatbillowsoftheoceanrollinglikeagreenwall,andfallingwithalong,loudroaruponalowcoralreef,wheretheyweredashedintowhitefoamandflungupincloudsofspray.Thisspraysometimesflewexceedinglyhigh,andeveryhereandthereabeautifulrainbowwasformedforamomentamongthefallingdrops.Weafterwardsfoundthatthiscoralreefextendedquiteroundtheisland,andformedanaturalbreakwatertoit.Beyondthis,thesearoseandtossedviolentlyfromtheeffectsofthestorm;butbetweenthereefandtheshoreitwasascalmandassmoothasapond.
MyheartwasfilledwithmoredelightthanIcanexpressatsightofsomanygloriousobjects,andmythoughtsturnedsuddenlytothecontemplationoftheCreatorofthemall.Imentionthisthemoregladly,becauseatthattime,Iamashamedtosay,IveryseldomthoughtofmyCreator,althoughIwasconstantlysurroundedbythemostbeautifulandwonderfulofHisworks.Iobserved,fromtheexpressionofmycompanion’scountenance,thathetooderivedmuchjoyfromthesplendidscenery,whichwasallthemoreagreeabletousafterourlongvoyageonthesaltsea.
