           Oneofthesavagesnowwentuptothewoodsandsoonreturnedwithabundleoffirewood,andwewerenotalittlesurprisedtoseehimsetfiretoitbytheverysamemeansusedbyJackthetimewemadeourfirstfirenamely,withthebowanddrill.Whenthefirewaskindled,twoofthepartywentagaintothewoodsandreturnedwithoneoftheboundmen.Adreadfulfeelingofhorrorcreptovermyheartasthethoughtflasheduponmethattheyweregoingtoburntheirenemies.Astheyborehimtothefiremyfeelingsalmostoverpoweredme.Igaspedforbreath,andseizingmyclub,endeavouredtospringtomyfeet;butJack’spowerfularmpinnedmetotheearth.Nextmomentoneofthesavagesraisedhisclubandfracturedthewretchedcreature’sskull.Hemusthavediedinstantly;and,strangethoughitmayseem,Iconfesstoafeelingofreliefwhenthedeedwasdone,becauseInowknewthatthepoorsavagecouldnotbeburnedalive.Scarcelyhadhislimbsceasedtoquiverwhenthemonsterscutslicesoffleshfromhisbody,andafterroastingthemslightlyoverthefire,devouredthem.

           Suddenlytherearoseacryfromthewoods,andinafewsecondsthetwosavageshastenedtowardsthefire,draggingthethreewomenandtheirtwoinfantsalongwiththem.Oneofthesewomenwasmuchyoungerthanhercompanions,andwewerestruckwiththemodestyofherdemeanourandthegentleexpressionofherface,which,althoughshehadtheflattishnoseandthicklipsoftheothers,wasofalight-browncolour,andweconjecturedthatshemustbeofadifferentrace.
