           Suddenlytheyellow-hairedsavagetripped,hisenemysprangforward,theponderousclubwasswung;butitdidnotdescend,foratthatmomentthesavagewasfelledtothegroundbyastonefromthehandofonewhohadwitnessedhischief’sdanger.Thiswastheturning-pointinthebattle.Thesavageswholandedfirstturnedandfledtowardsthebushonseeingthefalloftheirchief.Butnotoneescaped;theywereallovertakenandfelledtotheearth.Isaw,however,thattheywerenotallkilled.Indeed,theirenemies,nowthattheywereconquered,seemedanxioustotakethemalive;andtheysucceededinsecuringfifteen,whomtheyboundhandandfootwithcords,andcarryingthemupintothewoods,laidthemdownamongthebushes.Heretheyleftthem,forwhatpurposeIknewnot,andreturnedtothesceneofthelatebattle,wheretheremnantofthepartywerebathingtheirwounds.

           Outofthefortyblacksthatcomposedtheattackingpartyonlytwenty-eightremainedalive,twoofwhomweresentintothebushtohuntforthewomenandchildren.Oftheotherparty,asIhavesaid,onlyfifteensurvived,andthesewerelyingboundandhelplessonthegrass.

           JackandPeterkinandInowlookedateachother,andwhisperedourfearsthatthesavagesmightclamberuptherockstosearchforfreshwater,andsodiscoverourplaceofconcealment;butweweresomuchinterestedinwatchingtheirmovementsthatweagreedtoremainwherewewereandindeedwecouldnoteasilyhaverisenwithoutexposingourselvestodetection.
