           Thisideawasforcedverystronglyuponus,becausewesawnothinginthedirectionwhitherthewindwasblowingussavetheragingbillowsofthesea;andindeedwetrembledaswegazedaroundus,forwewerenowbeyondtheshelteroftheislands,anditseemedasthoughanyofthehugebillows,whichcurledoverinmassesoffoam,mightswallowusupinamoment.Thewateralsobegantowashinoveroursides,andIhadtokeepconstantlybailing;forJackcouldnotquitthehelm,norPeterkinthesail,foraninstant,withoutendangeringourlives.InthemidstofthisdistressJackutteredanexclamationofhope,andpointedtowardsalowislandorrockwhichlaydirectlyahead.Ithadbeenhithertounobserved,owingtothedarkcloudsthatobscuredtheskyandtheblindingspraythatseemedtofillthewholeatmosphere.

           Aswenearedthisrockweobservedthatitwasquitedestituteoftreesandverdure,andsolowthattheseabrokecompletelyoverit.Infact,itwasnothingmorethanthesummitofoneofthecoralformations,whichroseonlyafewfeetabovethelevelofthewater,andwas,instormyweather,allbutinvisible.Overthisislandthewaveswerebreakingintheutmostfury,andourheartssankwithinusaswesawthattherewasnotaspotwherewecouldthrustourlittleboatwithoutitsbeingdashedtopieces.

           "Showalittlebitmoresail!"criedJackaswesweptpasttheweathersideoftherockwithfearfulspeed.

           "Ay,ay!"answeredPeterkin,hoistingaboutafootmoreofoursail.
