Suddenlyonebigoldbird,thathadbeensittingonapointveryneartous,gazinginmuteastonishment,becamealarmed,andscuttlingdowntherocks,plumpedorfell,ratherthanran,intothesea.Itdivedinamoment,and,afewsecondsafterwards,cameoutofthewaterfaraheadwithsuchaspring,andsuchadivebackintotheseaagain,thatwecouldscarcelybelieveitwasnotafishthathadleapedinsport.
"Thatbeatseverything!"saidPeterkin,rubbinghisnose,andscrewinguphisfacewithanexpressionofexasperatedamazement."I’veheardofathingbeingneitherfish,flesh,norfowl;butIneverdidexpecttolivetoseeabrutethatwasallthreetogether—atonce—inone!Butlookthere!"hecontinued,pointingwithalookofresignationtotheshore—"lookthere!there’snoendtoit.Whathasthatbrutegotunderitstail?"
Weturnedtolookinthedirectionpointedout,andtheresawapenguinwalkingslowlyandverysedatelyalongtheshorewithaneggunderitstail.Therewereseveralothers,weobserved,burdenedinthesameway;andwefoundafterwardsthatthesewereaspeciesofpenguinthatalwayscarriedtheireggsso.Indeed,theyhadamostconvenientcavityforthepurpose,justbetweenthetailandthelegs.Wewereverymuchimpressedwiththeregularityandorderofthiscolony.Theislandseemedtobeapportionedoutintosquares,ofwhicheachpenguinpossessedone,andsatinstiffsolemnityinthemiddleofit,ortookaslowmarchupanddownthespacesbetween.
