           Havingapproachedtowithinafewyardsoftheisland,whichwasalowrock,withnoothervegetationonitthanafewbushes,welayonouroarsandgazedatthebirdswithsurpriseandpleasure,theyreturningourgazewithinterest.Wenowsawthattheirsoldierlikeappearancewasowingtothestifferectmannerinwhichtheysatontheirshortlegs"bolt-upright,"asPeterkinexpressedit.Theyhadblackheads,long,sharpbeaks,whitebreasts,andbluishbacks.Theirwingsweresoshortthattheylookedmorelikethefinsofafish,andindeedwesoonsawthattheyusedthemforthepurposeofswimmingunderwater.Therewerenoquillsonthesewings,butasortofscalyfeathers,whichalsothicklycoveredtheirbodies.Theirlegswereshort,andplacedsofarbackthatthebirds,whileonland,wereobligedtostandquiteuprightinordertokeeptheirbalance;butinthewatertheyfloatedlikeotherwater-fowl.Atfirstweweresostunnedwiththeclamourwhichtheyandothersea-birdskeptuparoundusthatweknewnotwhichwaytolook,fortheycoveredtherocksinthousands;butaswecontinuedtogaze,weobservedseveralquadrupeds(aswethought)walkinginthemidstofthepenguins.

           "Pullinabit,"criedPeterkin,"andlet’sseewhattheseare.Theymustbefondofnoisycompanytoconsortwithsuchcreatures."

           Tooursurprise,wefoundthatthesewerenootherthanpenguinswhichhadgonedownonallfours,andwerecrawlingamongthebushesontheirfeetandwings,justlikequadrupeds.
