Itwouldbeamatterofmuchtimeandlabourtodescribetheappearanceofthemultitudesoffishthatweredayafterdaydrawnintoourboatbymeansofthebrasshook.Peterkinalwayscaughtthem—forweobservedthathederivedmuchpleasurefromfishing—whileJackandIfoundampleamusementinlookingon,alsoingazingdownatthecoralgroves,andinbaitingthehook.Amongthefishthatwesaw,butdidnotcatch,wereporpoisesandswordfish,whalesandsharks.Theporpoisescamefrequentlyintoourlagooninshoals,andamusedusnotalittlebytheirboldleapsintotheairandtheirplayfulgambolsinthesea.Theswordfishwerewonderfulcreatures—someofthemapparentlytenfeetinlength,withanivoryspearsixoreightfeetlongprojectingfromtheirnoses.Weoftensawthemdartingafterotherfish,andnodoubttheysometimeskilledthemwiththeirivoryswords.Jackrememberedhavingheardonceofaswordfishattackingaship,whichseemedstrangeindeed;butastheyareofteninthehabitofattackingwhales,perhapsitmistooktheshipforone.
