Therewas,indeed,nonoteofdiscordwhateverinthesymphonyweplayedtogetheronthatsweetCoralIsland;andIamnowpersuadedthatthiswasowingtoourhavingbeenalltunedtothesamekey—namely,thatoflove!Yes,welovedoneanotherwithmuchfervencywhilewelivedonthatisland;and,forthematterofthat,weloveeachotherstill.
AndwhileIamonthissubject,orratherthesubjectthatjustprecededit—namely,thetides—Imayhereremarkonanothercuriousnaturalphenomenon.Wefoundthattherewaslittleornotwilightinthisisland.Wehadadistinctremembranceofthecharminglongtwilightathome,whichsomepeoplethinkthemostdelightfulpartoftheday—though,formypart,Ihavealwayspreferredsunrise;andwhenwefirstlanded,weusedtositdownonsomerockypointoreminence,atthecloseofourday’swork,toenjoytheeveningbreeze,butnosoonerhadthesunsunkbelowthehorizonthanallbecamesuddenlydark.Thisrendereditnecessarythatweshouldwatchthesunwhenwehappenedtobeouthunting;fortobesuddenlyleftinthedarkwhileinthewoodswasveryperplexing,as,althoughthestarsshonewithgreatbeautyandbrilliancy,theycouldnotpiercethroughthethickumbrageousboughsthatinterlacedaboveourheads.
