Wehadmuchseriousconversationonthissubjectofthetides;andJacktoldus,inhisownquiet,philosophicalway,thatthesetidesdidgreatgoodtotheworldinmanyways,particularlyinthewayofcleansingtheshoresoftheland,andcarryingoffthefilththatwasconstantlypouredintotheseatherefrom—which,Peterkinsuggested,wasremarkablytidyofittodo.PoorPeterkincouldneverletslipanopportunitytojoke,howeverinopportuneitmightbe,whichatfirstwefoundratheradisagreeablepropensity,asitofteninterruptedtheflowofveryagreeableconversation—and,indeed,Icannottoostronglyrecordmydisapprobationofthistendencyingeneral;butwebecamesousedtoitatlastthatwefounditnointerruptionwhatever.Indeed,strangetosay,wecametofeelthatitwasanecessarypartofourenjoyment(suchistheforceofhabit),andfoundthesuddenoutburstsofmirth,resultingfromhishumorousdisposition,quitenaturalandrefreshingtousinthemidstofourmoreseriousconversations.ButImustnotmisrepresentPeterkin.Weoftenfound,tooursurprise,thatheknewmanythingswhichwedidnot;andIalsoobservedthatthosethingswhichhelearnedfromexperiencewereneverforgotten.FromallthesethingsIcameatlengthtounderstandthatthingsveryoppositeanddissimilarinthemselves,whenunited,domakeanagreeablewhole;as,forexample,wethreeonthisourisland,althoughmostunlikeinmanythings,whenunited,madeatriosoharmoniousthatIquestionifthereevermetbeforesuchanagreeabletriumvirate.
