           “Aw,come,Carrie,”hesaid,“whatcanyoudoalone?Letmehelpyou.”

           Hepressedherhandgentlyandshetriedtowithdrawit.Atthishehelditfast,andshenolongerprotested.Thenheslippedthegreenbackshehadintoherpalm,andwhenshebegantoprotest,hewhispered:

           “I’llloanittoyou—that’sallright.I’llloanittoyou.”

           Hemadehertakeit.Shefeltboundtohimbyastrangetieofaffectionnow.Theywentout,andhewalkedwithherfaroutsouthtowardPolkStreet,talking.

           “Youdon’twanttolivewiththosepeople?”hesaidinoneplace,abstractedly.Carrieheardit,butitmadeonlyaslightimpression.

           “Comedownandmeetmeto-morrow,”hesaid,“andwe’llgotothematinée.Willyou?”

           Carrieprotestedawhile,butacquiesced.

           “You’renotdoinganything.Getyourselfanicepairofshoesandajacket.”

           Shescarcelygaveathoughttothecomplicationwhichwouldtroubleherwhenhewasgone.Inhispresence,shewasofhisownhopeful,easy-way-outmood.

           “Don’tyoubotheraboutthosepeopleoutthere,”hesaidatparting.“I’llhelpyou.”

           Carrielefthim,feelingasthoughagreatarmhadslippedoutbeforehertodrawofftrouble.Themoneyshehadacceptedwastwosoft,green,handsometen-dollarbills.
