           “Well,well!”saidavoice.InthefirstglanceshebeheldDrouet.Hewasnotonlyrosy-cheeked,butradiant.Hewastheessenceofsunshineandgood-humour.“Why,howareyou,Carrie?”hesaid.“You’readaisy.Wherehaveyoubeen?”

           Carriesmiledunderhisirresistiblefloodofgeniality.

           “I’vebeenouthome,”shesaid.

           “Well,”hesaid,“Isawyouacrossthestreetthere.Ithoughtitwasyou.Iwasjustcomingouttoyourplace.Howareyou,anyhow?”

           “I’mallright,”saidCarrie,smiling.

           Drouetlookedheroverandsawsomethingdifferent.

           “Well,”hesaid,“Iwanttotalktoyou.You’renotgoinganywhereinparticular,areyou?”

           “Notjustnow,”saidCarrie.

           “Let’sgouphereandhavesomethingtoeat.George!butI’mgladtoseeyouagain.”

           Shefeltsorelievedinhisradiantpresence,somuchlookedafterandcaredfor,thatsheassentedgladly,thoughwiththeslightestairofholdingback.
