           Asshewasstandinginherproperpositioninthewings,awaitinganotherentry,thegreatcomedianmadehisexitpastherandpausedinrecognition.

           “Youcanjustleavethatinhereafter,”heremarked,seeinghowintelligentsheappeared.“Don’taddanymore,though.”

           “Thankyou,”saidCarrie,humbly.Whenhewentonshefoundherselftremblingviolently.

           “Well,you’reinluck,”remarkedanothermemberofthechorus.“Thereisn’tanotheroneofushasgotaline.”

           Therewasnogainsayingthevalueofthis.Everybodyinthecompanyrealisedthatshehadgotastart.Carriehuggedherselfwhennexteveningthelinesgotthesameapplause.Shewenthomerejoicing,knowingthatsoonsomethingmustcomeofit.ItwasHurstwoodwho,byhispresence,causedhermerrythoughtstofleeandreplacedthemwithsharplongingsforanendofdistress.

           Thenextdaysheaskedhimabouthisventure.

           “They’renottryingtorunanycarsexceptwithpolice.Theydon’twantanybodyjustnow—notbeforenextweek.”

           Nextweekcame,butCarriesawnochange.Hurstwoodseemedmoreapatheticthanever.Hesawheroffmorningstorehearsalsandthelikewiththeutmostcalm.Hereadandread.Severaltimeshefoundhimselfstaringatanitem,butthinkingofsomethingelse.Thefirstoftheselapsesthathesharplynoticedconcernedahilariouspartyhehadonceattendedatadrivingclub,ofwhichhehadbeenamember.
