           Carrielookedabouther,aftershehaddrunkatinfulofwaterfromabucketinonecorner,foraplacetositandeat.Theothergirlshadrangedthemselvesaboutthewindowsorthework-benchesofthoseofthemenwhohadgoneout.Shesawnoplacewhichdidnotholdacoupleoragroupofgirls,andbeingtootimidtothinkofintrudingherself,shesoughtouthermachineand,seateduponherstool,openedherlunchonherlap.Thereshesatlisteningtothechatterandcommentabouther.Itwas,forthemostpart,sillyandgracedbythecurrentslang.Severalofthemenintheroomexchangedcomplimentswiththegirlsatlongrange.

           “Say,Kitty,”calledonetoagirlwhowasdoingawaltzstepinafewfeetofspacenearoneofthewindows,“areyougoingtotheballwithme?”

           “Lookout,Kitty,”calledanother,“you’lljaryourbackhair.”

           “Goon,Rubber,”washeronlycomment.
