           “Whoisthatfourthgirlthereontheright—theonecomingroundattheendnow?”

           “Oh,”saidtheballet-master,“that’sMissMadenda.”

           “She’sgoodlooking.Whydon’tyouletherheadthatline?”

           “Iwill,”saidtheman.

           “Justdothat.She’lllookbettertherethanthewomanyou’vegot.”

           “Allright.Iwilldothat,”saidthemaster.

           ThenexteveningCarriewascalledout,muchasifforanerror.

           “Youleadyourcompanyto-night,”saidthemaster.

           “Yes,sir,”saidCarrie.

           “Putsnapintoit,”headded.“Wemusthavesnap.”

           “Yes,sir,”repliedCarrie.

           Astonishedatthischange,shethoughtthattheheretoforeleadermustbeill;butwhenshesawherintheline,withadistinctexpressionofsomethingunfavourableinhereye,shebegantothinkthatperhapsitwasmerit.

           Shehadachicwayoftossingherheadtooneside,andholdingherarmsasifforaction—notlistlessly.
