           ThesightofhimalwaysaroundinhisuntidyclothesandgloomyappearancedroveCarrietoseekreliefinotherplaces.Twiceaweektherewerematinées,andthenHurstwoodateacoldsnack,whichhepreparedhimself.Twootherdaystherewererehearsalsbeginningatteninthemorningandlastingusuallyuntilone.Now,tothisCarrieaddedafewvisitstooneortwochorusgirls,includingtheblue-eyedsoldierofthegoldenhelmet.Shediditbecauseitwaspleasantandarelieffromdulnessofthehomeoverwhichherhusbandbrooded.

           Theblue-eyedsoldier’snamewasOsborne—LolaOsborne.HerroomwasinNineteenthStreetnearFourthAvenue,ablocknowgivenupwhollytoofficebuildings.Hereshehadacomfortablebackroom,lookingoveracollectionofbackyardsinwhichgrewanumberofshadetreespleasanttosee.

           “Isn’tyourhomeinNewYork?”sheaskedofLolaoneday.
