           Carriestoodlookingwhiletheladyretiredtoheroffice.

           “Whatisyouraddress?”inquiredayoungladybehindthecounter,takingupthecurtailedconversation.

           “Mrs.GeorgeWheeler,”saidCarrie,movingovertowhereshewaswriting.Thewomanwroteheraddressinfullandthenallowedhertodepartatherleisure.

           SheencounteredaverysimilarexperienceintheofficeofMr.Jenks,onlyhevarieditbysayingattheclose:“Ifyoucouldplayatsomelocalhouse,orhadaprogrammewithyournameonit,Imightdosomething.”

           Inthethirdplacetheindividualasked:

           “Whatsortofworkdoyouwanttodo?”

           “Well,doyouwanttogetinacomedyoronthevaudevillestageorinthechorus?”

           “Howmuch?”saidCarrie,who,ridiculousasitmayseem,hadnotthoughtofthisbefore.

           “Well,that’sforyoutosay,”heansweredshrewdly.

           Carrielookedathimcuriously.Shehardlyknewhowtocontinuetheinquiry.

           “CouldyougetmeapartifIpaid?”

           “Ifwedidn’tyou’dgetyourmoneyback.”

           “Oh,”shesaid.

           Theagentsawhewasdealingwithaninexperiencedsoul,andcontinuedaccordingly.

           Carriesawalight.
