           Heledthewaythroughdark,box-linedaisleswhichhadthesmellofnewshoes,untiltheycametoanirondoorwhichopenedintothefactoryproper.Therewasalarge,low-ceiledroom,withclacking,rattlingmachinesatwhichmeninwhiteshirtsleevesandblueginghamapronswereworking.Shefollowedhimdiffidentlythroughtheclatteringautomatons,keepinghereyesstraightbeforeher,andflushingslightly.Theycrossedtoafarcornerandtookanelevatortothesixthfloor.Outofthearrayofmachinesandbenches,Mr.Brownsignalledaforeman.

           “Thisisthegirl,”hesaid,andturningtoCarrie,“Yougowithhim.”Hethenreturned,andCarriefollowedhernewsuperiortoalittledeskinacorner,whichheusedasakindofofficialcentre.

           “You’veneverworkedatanythinglikethisbefore,haveyou?”hequestioned,rathersternly.

           “No,sir,”sheanswered.

           Heseemedratherannoyedathavingtobotherwithsuchhelp,butputdownhernameandthenledheracrosstowherealineofgirlsoccupiedstoolsinfrontofclackingmachines.
