           “IknewyouhadleftChicago.Iwaswonderingwhathadbecomeofyou.”

           “Oh,I’mherenow,”answeredHurstwood,anxioustogetaway.

           “Doingwell,Isuppose?”

           “Excellent.”

           “Gladtohearit.”

           Theylookedatoneanother,ratherembarrassed.

           “Well,Ihaveanengagementwithafriendupstairs.I’llleaveyou.Solong.”

           Hurstwoodnoddedhishead.

           “Damnitall,”hemurmured,turningtowardthedoor.
