           Carrienoticedthis,andinscanningitthepriceofspringchickencarriedherbacktothatotherbilloffareandfardifferentoccasionwhen,forthefirsttime,shesatwithDrouetinagoodrestaurantinChicago.Itwasonlymomentary—asadnoteasoutofanoldsong—andthenitwasgone.ButinthatflashwasseentheotherCarrie—poor,hungry,driftingatherwits’ends,andallChicagoacoldandclosedworld,fromwhichsheonlywanderedbecauseshecouldnotfindwork.

           Onthewallsweredesignsincolour,squarespotsofrobin’s-eggblue,setinornateframesofgilt,whosecornerswereelaboratemouldingsoffruitandflowers,withfatcupidshoveringinangeliccomfort.Ontheceilingswerecolouredtracerieswithmoregilt,leadingtoacentrewherespreadaclusteroflights—incandescentglobesmingledwithglitteringprismsandstuccotendrilsofgilt.Thefloorwasofareddishhue,waxedandpolished,andineverydirectionweremirrors—tall,brilliant,bevel-edgedmirrors—reflectingandre-reflectingforms,faces,andcandelabraascoreandahundredtimes.
