           “Whatisyourline?”askedCarrie.

           “I’mconnectedwithanelectricalcompany,”saidtheyouth.

           CarriefollowedupthisdesultoryconversationwithoccasionalinterruptionsfromtheVances.Severaltimesitbecamegeneralandpartiallyhumorous,andinthatmannertherestaurantwasreached.

           Carriehadnoticedtheappearanceofgayetyandpleasure-seekinginthestreetswhichtheywerefollowing.Coacheswerenumerous,pedestriansmany,andinFifty-ninthStreetthestreetcarswerecrowded.AtFifty-ninthStreetandFifthAvenueablazeoflightsfromseveralnewhotelswhichborderedthePlazaSquaregaveasuggestionofsumptuoushotellife.FifthAvenue,thehomeofthewealthy,wasnoticeablycrowdedwithcarriages,andgentlemenineveningdress.AtSherry’sanimposingdoormanopenedthecoachdoorandhelpedthemout.
