           “HowI’dliketogothere.IcrossedHalsteadStreetto-day,didn’tI?”

           Atthistherewasaslighthaltinthenaturalreply.Thoughtsareastrangelypermeatingfactor.Athersuggestionofgoingtothetheatre,theunspokenshadeofdisapprovaltothedoingofthosethingswhichinvolvedtheexpenditureofmoney—shadesoffeelingwhicharoseinthemindofHansonandtheninMinnie—slightlyaffectedtheatmosphereofthetable.Minnieanswered“yes,”butCarriecouldfeelthatgoingtothetheatrewaspoorlyadvocatedhere.ThesubjectwasputoffforalittlewhileuntilHanson,throughwithhismeal,tookhispaperandwentintothefrontroom.

           “IshouldliketowalkupandseeHalsteadStreet,ifitisn’ttoofar,”saidCarrie,afteratime.“Whydon’twegotothetheatreto-night?”

           “Oh,Idon’tthinkSvenwouldwanttogoto-night,”returnedMinnie.“Hehastogetupsoearly.
