           Foranotherthing,Hurstwoodmissedthecelebrities—thosewell-dressed,éliteindividualswholendgracetotheaveragebarsandbringnewsfromfar-offandexclusivecircles.Hedidnotseeonesuchinamonth.Evenings,whenstillathispost,hewouldoccasionallyreadintheeveningpapersincidentsconcerningcelebritieswhomheknew—whomhehaddrunkaglasswithmanyatime.TheywouldvisitabarlikeFitzgeraldandMoy’sinChicago,ortheHoffmanHouse,uptown,butheknewthathewouldneverseethemdownhere.Again,thebusinessdidnotpayaswellashethought.Itincreasedalittle,buthefoundhewouldhavetowatchhishouseholdexpenses,whichwashumiliating.

           Intheverybeginningitwasadelighttogohomelateatnight,ashedid,andfindCarrie.
