AmanofHurstwood’sageandtemperamentisnotsubjecttotheillusionsandburningdesiresofyouth,butneitherhashethestrengthofhopewhichgushesasafountainintheheartofyouth.Suchanatmospherecouldnotinciteinhimthecravingsofaboyofeighteen,butinsofarastheywereexcited,thelackofhopemadethemproportionatelybitter.Hecouldnotfailtonoticethesignsofaffluenceandluxuryoneveryhand.HehadbeentoNewYorkbeforeandknewtheresourcesofitsfolly.Inpartitwasanawesomeplacetohim,forheregatheredallthathemostrespectedonthisearth—wealth,place,andfame.
