           “Whatareyouupto?”hesaid,smiling.

           “Justcleaning,”shereplied,stoppingandwindingadustingtowelaboutherhand.

           “Tiredofit?”

           “Notsovery.”

           “Letmeshowyousomething,”hesaid,affably,comingoverandtakingoutofhispocketalittlelithographedcardwhichhadbeenissuedbyawholesaletobaccocompany.Onthiswasprintedapictureofaprettygirl,holdingastripedparasol,thecoloursofwhichcouldbechangedbymeansofarevolvingdiskintheback,whichshowedred,yellow,green,andbluethroughlittleintersticesmadeinthegroundoccupiedbytheumbrellatop.

           “Isn’tthatclever?”hesaid,handingittoherandshowingherhowitworked.“Youneversawanythinglikethatbefore.”

           “Isn’titnice?”sheanswered.

           “Youcanhaveitifyouwantit,”heremarked.

           “That’saprettyringyouhave,”hesaid,touchingacommonplacesettingwhichadornedthehandholdingthecardhehadgivenher.
