           Shedidnotfullyrealisethatthiswasso,buttherewassomethingincondescensioncomingfromherwhichwasinfinitelysweet.Whenshewasreadytheyclimbedintothewaitingcoachanddrovedowntown;once,only,didshefindanopportunitytoexpressherfeeling,andthatwaswhenthemanagerprecededDrouetinthecoachandsatbesideher.BeforeDrouetwasfullyinshehadsqueezedHurstwood’shandinagentle,impulsivemanner.Themanagerwasbesidehimselfwithaffection.Hecouldhavesoldhissoultobewithheralone.“Ah,”hethought,“theagonyofit.”

           Drouethungon,thinkinghewasallinall.Thedinnerwasspoiledbyhisenthusiasm.Hurstwoodwenthomefeelingasifheshoulddieifhedidnotfindaffectionaterelief.Hewhispered“to-morrow”passionatelytoCarrie,andsheunderstood.Hewalkedawayfromthedrummerandhisprizeatpartingfeelingasifhecouldslayhimandnotregret.Carriealsofeltthemiseryofit.

           “Good-night,”hesaid,simulatinganeasyfriendliness.

           “Good-night,”saidthelittleactress,tenderly.

           “Thefool!”hesaid,nowhatingDrouet.“Theidiot!I’lldohimyet,andthatquick!We’llseeto-morrow.”

           “Well,ifyouaren’tawonder,”Drouetwassaying,complacently,squeezingCarrie’sarm.“Youarethedandiestlittlegirlonearth.”
