InamomentCarriewasaloneagain,andwassaying,withanimation:
“Imustreturntothecity,nomatterwhatdangersmaylurkhere.Imustgo,secretlyifIcan;openly,ifImust.”
Therewasasoundofhorses’hoofsoutside,andthenRay’svoicesaying:“No,Ishallnotrideagain.Puthimup.”
Heentered,andthenbeganascenewhichhadasmuchtodowiththecreationofthetragedyofaffectioninHurstwoodasanythinginhispeculiarandinvolvedcareer.ForCarriehadresolvedtomakesomethingofthisscene,and,nowthatthecuehadcome,itbegantotakeafeelingholduponher.BothHurstwoodandDrouetnotedtherisingsentimentassheproceeded.
“IthoughtyouhadgonewithPearl,”shesaidtoherlover.
“Ididgopartoftheway,butIleftthepartyamiledowntheroad.”
“YouandPearlhadnodisagreement?”
