           Carrietookthecue,andreplied:

           “Oh,thankyou.”

           “Iwasjusttellingher,”putinDrouet,nowdelightedwithhispossession,“thatIthoughtshedidfine.”

           “Indeedyoudid,”saidHurstwood,turninguponCarrieeyesinwhichshereadmorethanthewords.

           Carrielaughedluxuriantly.

           “Ifyoudoaswellintherestoftheplay,youwillmakeusallthinkyouareabornactress.”

           Carriesmiledagain.ShefelttheacutenessofHurstwood’sposition,andwisheddeeplythatshecouldbealonewithhim,butshedidnotunderstandthechangeinDrouet.Hurstwoodfoundthathecouldnottalk,repressedashewas,andgrudgingDroueteverymomentofhispresence,hebowedhimselfoutwiththeeleganceofaFaust.Outsidehesethisteethwithenvy.

           “Damnit!”hesaid,“ishealwaysgoingtobeintheway?”Hewasmoodywhenhegotbacktothebox,andcouldnottalkforthinkingofhiswretchedsituation.

           Asthecurtainforthenextactarose,Drouetcameback.Hewasverymuchenlivenedintemperandinclinedtowhisper,butHurstwoodpretendedinterest.Hefixedhiseyesonthestage,althoughCarriewasnotthere,ashortbitofmelodramaticcomedyprecedingherentrance.Hedidnotseewhatwasgoingon,however.
