           Carrieonlysmiledconsciously.

           HewalkedawaytolistentoBamberger,whowasfeeblyspoutingsomeardentline.

           Mrs.MorgansawthedriftofthingsandgleamedatCarriewithenviousandsnappingblackeyes.

           Therehearsalendedforoneday,andCarriewenthomefeelingthatshehadacquittedherselfsatisfactorily.Thewordsofthedirectorwereringinginherears,andshelongedforanopportunitytotellHurstwood.Shewantedhimtoknowjusthowwellshewasdoing.Drouet,too,wasanobjectforherconfidences.Shecouldhardlywaituntilheshouldaskher,andyetshedidnothavethevanitytobringitup.Thedrummer,however,hadanotherlineofthoughtto-night,andherlittleexperiencedidnotappealtohimasimportant.Helettheconversationdrop,saveforwhatshechosetorecitewithoutsolicitation,andCarriewasnotgoodatthat.
