           Finallyhehitupononeofthoseproblematicalpropositionswhichoftendisguiseourowndesireswhileleadingustoanunderstandingofthedifficultieswhichothersmakeforus,andsodiscoverforusaway.Ithadnottheslightestconnectionwithanythingintendedonhispart,andwasspokenatrandombeforehehadgivenitamoment’sseriousthought.

           “Carrie,”hesaid,lookingintoherfaceandassumingaseriouslookwhichhedidnotfeel,“supposeIweretocometoyounextweek,orthisweekforthatmatter—to-nightsay—andtellyouIhadtogoaway—thatIcouldn’tstayanotherminuteandwasn’tcomingbackanymore—wouldyoucomewithme?”Hissweetheartviewedhimwiththemostaffectionateglance,heranswerreadybeforethewordswereoutofhismouth.

           “Yes,”shesaid.

           “Youwouldn’tstoptoargueorarrange?”
