           Heconsoledhimselfwiththethought,however,that,afterall,hewasnotwithoutaffection.Thingsmightgoastheywouldathishouse,buthehadCarrieoutsideofit.Withhismind’seyehelookedintohercomfortableroominOgdenPlace,wherehehadspentseveralsuchdelightfulevenings,andthoughthowcharmingitwouldbewhenDrouetwasdisposedofentirelyandshewaswaitingeveningsincoseylittlequartersforhim.ThatnocausewouldcomeupwherebyDrouetwouldbeledtoinformCarrieconcerninghismarriedstate,hefelthopeful.Thingsweregoingsosmoothlythathebelievedtheywouldnotchange.ShortlynowhewouldpersuadeCarrieandallwouldbesatisfactory.

           Thedayaftertheirtheatrevisithebeganwritingherregularly—alettereverymorning,andbegginghertodoasmuchforhim.Hewasnotliterarybyanymeans,butexperienceoftheworldandhisgrowingaffectiongavehimsomewhatofastyle.Thisheexercisedathisofficedeskwithperfectdeliberation.Hepurchasedaboxofdelicatelycolouredandscentedwritingpaperinmonogram,whichhekeptlockedinoneofthedrawers.Hisfriendsnowwonderedattheclericandveryofficial-lookingnatureofhisposition.
