Beforefollowingherinherroundofseeking,letuslookatthesphereinwhichherfuturewastolie.In1889Chicagohadthepeculiarqualificationsofgrowthwhichmadesuchadventuresomepilgrimagesevenonthepartofyounggirlsplausible.Itsmanyandgrowingcommercialopportunitiesgaveitwidespreadfame,whichmadeofitagiantmagnet,drawingtoitself,fromallquarters,thehopefulandthehopeless—thosewhohadtheirfortuneyettomakeandthosewhosefortunesandaffairshadreachedadisastrousclimaxelsewhere.
