           ItsohappenedthatonthenightwhenHurstwood,Carrie,andDrouetwereintheboxatMcVickar’s,George,Jr.,wasinthesixthrowoftheparquetwiththedaughterofH.B.Carmichael,thethirdpartnerofawholesaledry-goodshouseofthatcity.Hurstwooddidnotseehisson,forhesat,aswashiswont,asfarbackaspossible,leavinghimselfjustpartiallyvisible,whenhebentforward,tothosewithinthefirstsixrowsinquestion.Itwashiswonttositthiswayineverytheatre—tomakehispersonalityasinconspicuousaspossiblewhereitwouldbenoadvantagetohimtohaveitotherwise.

           Henevermovedbutwhat,iftherewasanydangerofhisconductbeingmisconstruedorill-reported,helookedcarefullyabouthimandcountedthecostofeveryinchofconspicuity.

           Thenextmorningatbreakfasthissonsaid:

           “Isawyou,Governor,lastnight.”

           “WereyouatMcVickar’s?”saidHurstwood,withthebestgraceintheworld.

           “Yes,”saidyoungGeorge.

           “Whowith?”

           “MissCarmichael.”

           Mrs.Hurstwooddirectedaninquiringglanceatherhusband,butcouldnotjudgefromhisappearancewhetheritwasanymorethanacasuallookintothetheatrewhichwasreferredto.

           “Howwastheplay?”sheinquired.
