           “It’sfromHurstwood,”saidDrouet,notingthesuperscriptionashetoreitopen.

           “YouaretocomedownandseeJoeJeffersonwithmeto-night,”itraninpart.“It’smyturn,asweagreedtheotherday.Allotherbetsareoff.”

           “Well,whatdoyousaytothis?”askedDrouet,innocently,whileCarrie’smindbubbledwithfavourablereplies.

           “Youhadbetterdecide,Charlie,”shesaid,reservedly.

           “Iguesswehadbettergo,ifyoucanbreakthatengagementupstairs,”saidDrouet.

           “Oh,Ican,”returnedCarriewithoutthinking.

           DrouetselectedwritingpaperwhileCarriewenttochangeherdress.Shehardlyexplainedtoherselfwhythislatestinvitationappealedtohermost.

           “ShallIwearmyhairasIdidyesterday?”sheasked,asshecameoutwithseveralarticlesofapparelpending.

           “Sure,”hereturned,pleasantly.

           Shewasrelievedtoseethathefeltnothing.ShedidnotcreditherwillingnesstogotoanyfascinationHurstwoodheldforher.ItseemedthatthecombinationofHurstwood,Drouet,andherselfwasmoreagreeablethananythingelsethathadbeensuggested.Shearrayedherselfmostcarefullyandtheystartedoff,extendingexcusesupstairs.
