           Drouethadnotthoughtofthat.

           Hewasinthebestformforentertainingthisevening.Hisclotheswereparticularlynewandrichinappearance.Thecoatlapelsstoodoutwiththatmediumstiffnesswhichexcellentclothpossesses.ThevestwasofarichScotchplaid,setwithadoublerowofroundmother-of-pearlbuttons.Hiscravatwasashinycombinationofsilkenthreads,notloud,notinconspicuous.WhatheworedidnotstriketheeyesoforciblyasthatwhichDrouethadon,butCarriecouldseetheeleganceofthematerial.Hurstwood’sshoeswereofsoft,blackcalf,polishedonlytoadullshine.DrouetworepatentleatherbutCarriecouldnothelpfeelingthattherewasadistinctioninfavourofthesoftleather,whereallelsewassorich.Shenoticedthesethingsalmostunconsciously.Theywerethingswhichwouldnaturallyflowfromthesituation.ShewasusedtoDrouet’sappearance.

           “Supposewehavealittlegameofeuchre?”suggestedHurstwood,afteralightroundofconversation.HewasratherdexterousinavoidingeverythingthatwouldsuggestthatheknewanythingofCarrie’spast.Hekeptawayfrompersonalitiesaltogether,andconfinedhimselftothosethingswhichdidnotconcernindividualsatall.
