           Onthisaccounthestilldevotedsometimetoshowinghiswifeabout—timewhichwouldhavebeenwearisomeindeedifithadnotbeenforthepeoplehewouldmeetandthelittleenjoymentswhichdidnotdependuponherpresenceorabsence.Hewatchedherwithconsiderablecuriosityattimes,forshewasstillattractiveinawayandmenlookedather.Shewasaffable,vain,subjecttoflattery,andthiscombination,heknewquitewell,mightproduceatragedyinawomanofherhomeposition.Owingtohisorderofmind,hisconfidenceinthesexwasnotgreat.Hiswifeneverpossessedthevirtueswhichwouldwintheconfidenceandadmirationofamanofhisnature.Aslongasshelovedhimvigorouslyhecouldseehowconfidencecouldbe,butwhenthatwasnolongerthebindingchain—well,somethingmighthappen.

           Duringthelastyearortwotheexpensesofthefamilyseemedalargething.Jessicawantedfineclothes,andMrs.Hurstwood,nottobeoutshonebyherdaughter,alsofrequentlyenlivenedherapparel.Hurstwoodhadsaidnothinginthepast,butonedayhemurmured.

           “Jessicamusthaveanewdressthismonth,”saidMrs.Hurstwoodonemorning.

           Hurstwoodwasarrayinghimselfinoneofhisperfectionvestsbeforetheglassatthetime.

           “Ithoughtshejustboughtone,”hesaid.

           “Thatwasjustsomethingforeveningwear,”returnedhiswifecomplacently.

           “Itseemstome,”returnedHurstwood,“thatshe’sspendingagooddealfordressesoflate.”

           “Well,she’sgoingoutmore,”concludedhiswife,butthetoneofhisvoiceimpressedherascontainingsomethingshehadnotheardtherebefore.
