           Rogojinwouldnotcomeifallwerewellwithhim,thatwaspartofthethought;hewouldcomeifallwerenotwell;andcertainly,undoubtedly,allwouldnotbewellwithhim.Theprincecouldnotbearthisnewidea;hetookhishatandrushedouttowardsthestreet.Itwasalmostdarkinthepassage.

           “WhatifheweretocomeoutofthatcornerasIgobyandandstopme?”thoughttheprince,asheapproachedthefamiliarspot.Butnoonecameout.

           Hepassedunderthegatewayandintothestreet.ThecrowdsofpeoplewalkingaboutasisalwaysthecaseatsunsetinPetersburg,duringthesummersurprisedhim,buthewalkedoninthedirectionofRogojin’shouse.

           Aboutfiftyyardsfromthehotel,atthefirstcross-road,ashepassedthroughthecrowdoffoot-passengerssaunteringalong,someonetouchedhisshoulder,andsaidinawhisperintohisear:

           “LefNicolaievitch,myfriend,comealongwithme.”ItwasRogojin.

           “Iwasthere,”saidRogojin,unexpectedly.“Comealong.”Theprincewassurprisedatthisanswer;buthisastonishmentincreasedacoupleofminutesafterwards,whenhebegantoconsiderit.Havingthoughtitover,heglancedatRogojininalarm.Thelatterwasstridingalongayardorsoahead,lookingstraightinfrontofhim,andmechanicallymakingwayforanyonehemet.
