           TheflatoccupiedbyGaniaandhisfamilywasonthethirdfloorofthehouse.Itwasreachedbyacleanlightstaircase,andconsistedofsevenrooms,aniceenoughlodging,andonewouldhavethoughtalittletoogoodforaclerkontwothousandroublesayear.Butitwasdesignedtoaccommodateafewlodgersonboardterms,andhadbeentakenafewmonthssince,muchtothedisgustofGania,attheurgentrequestofhismotherandhissister,VarvaraArdalionovna,wholongedtodosomethingtoincreasethefamilyincomealittle,andfixedtheirhopesuponlettinglodgings.Ganiafrownedupontheidea.Hethoughtitinfradig,anddidnotquitelikeappearinginsocietyafterwardsthatsocietyinwhichhehadbeenaccustomedtoposeuptonowasayoungmanofratherbrilliantprospects.Alltheseconcessionsandrebuffsoffortune,oflate,hadwoundedhisspiritseverely,andhistemperhadbecomeextremelyirritable,hiswrathbeinggenerallyquiteoutofproportiontothecause.Butifhehadmadeuphismindtoputupwiththissortoflifeforawhile,itwasonlyontheplainunderstandingwithhisinnerselfthathewouldverysoonchangeitall,andhavethingsashechoseagain.Yettheverymeansbywhichhehopedtomakethischangethreatenedtoinvolvehiminevengreaterdifficultiesthanhehadhadbefore.

           Theflatwasdividedbyapassagewhichledstraightoutoftheentrance-hall.Alongonesideofthiscorridorlaythethreeroomswhichweredesignedfortheaccommodationofthe“highlyrecommended”lodgers.
