           Theprincedidnotdiebeforehisweddingeitherbydayornight,ashehadforetoldthathemight.Veryprobablyhepasseddisturbednights,andwasafflictedwithbaddreams;but,duringthedaytime,amonghisfellow-men,heseemedaskindasever,andevencontented;onlyalittlethoughtfulwhenalone.

           Theweddingwashurriedon.ThedaywasfixedforexactlyaweekafterEvgenie’svisittotheprince.Inthefaceofsuchhasteasthis,eventheprince’sbestfriends(ifhehadhadany)wouldhavefeltthehopelessnessofanyattempttosave“thepoormadman.”RumoursaidthatinthevisitofEvgeniePavlovitchwastobediscernedtheinfluenceofLizabethaProkofievnaandherhusband...Butifthosegoodsouls,intheboundlesskindnessoftheirhearts,weredesirousofsavingtheeccentricyoungfellowfromruin,theywereunabletotakeanystrongermeasurestoattainthatend.Neithertheirposition,northeirprivateinclination,perhaps(andonlynaturally),wouldallowthemtouseanymorepronouncedmeans.

           Wehaveobservedbeforethatevensomeoftheprince’snearestneighbourshadbeguntoopposehim.VeraLebedeff’spassivedisagreementwaslimitedtothesheddingofafewsolitarytears;tomorefrequentsittingaloneathome,andtoadiminishedfrequencyinhervisitstotheprince’sapartments.

           Coliawasoccupiedwithhisfatheratthistime.Theoldmandiedduringasecondstroke,whichtookplacejusteightdaysafterthefirst.
