Chapter 1

           TowardstheendofNovember,duringathaw,atnineo’clockonemorning,atrainontheWarsawandPetersburgrailwaywasapproachingthelattercityatfullspeed.Themorningwassodampandmistythatitwasonlywithgreatdifficultythatthedaysucceededinbreaking;anditwasimpossibletodistinguishanythingmorethanafewyardsawayfromthecarriagewindows.

           Someofthepassengersbythisparticulartrainwerereturningfromabroad;butthethird-classcarriageswerethebestfilled,chieflywithinsignificantpersonsofvariousoccupationsanddegrees,pickedupatthedifferentstationsnearertown.Allofthemseemedweary,andmostofthemhadsleepyeyesandashiveringexpression,whiletheircomplexionsgenerallyappearedtohavetakenonthecolourofthefogoutside.

           Whendaydawned,twopassengersinoneofthethird-classcarriagesfoundthemselvesoppositeeachother.Bothwereyoungfellows,bothwereratherpoorlydressed,bothhadremarkablefaces,andbothwereevidentlyanxioustostartaconversation.Iftheyhadbutknownwhy,atthisparticularmoment,theywerebothremarkablepersons,theywouldundoubtedlyhavewonderedatthestrangechancewhichhadsetthemdownoppositetooneanotherinathird-classcarriageoftheWarsawRailwayCompany.

           Oneofthemwasayoungfellowofabouttwenty-seven,nottall,withblackcurlinghair,andsmall,grey,fieryeyes.
