           TheEpanchinfamily,oratleastthemoreseriousmembersofit,weresometimesgrievedbecausetheyseemedsounliketherestoftheworld.Theywerenotquitecertain,buthadattimesastrongsuspicionthatthingsdidnothappentothemastheydidtootherpeople.Othersledaquiet,uneventfullife,whiletheyweresubjecttocontinualupheavals.Otherskeptontherailswithoutdifficulty;theyranoffattheslightestobstacle.Otherhousesweregovernedbyatimidroutine;theirswassomehowdifferent.PerhapsLizabethaProkofievnawasaloneinmakingthesefretfulobservations;thegirls,thoughnotwantinginintelligence,werestillyoung;thegeneralwasintelligent,too,butnarrow,andinanydifficultyhewascontenttosay,“H’m!”andleavethemattertohiswife.Consequently,onherfelltheresponsibility.Itwasnotthattheydistinguishedthemselvesasafamilybyanyparticularoriginality,orthattheirexcursionsoffthetrackledtoanybreachoftheproprieties.Ohno.
