           Afortnighthadpassedsincetheeventsrecordedinthelastchapter,andthepositionoftheactorsinourstoryhadbecomesochangedthatitisalmostimpossibleforustocontinuethetalewithoutsomefewexplanations.Yetwefeelthatweoughttolimitourselvestothesimplerecordoffacts,withoutmuchattemptatexplanation,foraverypatentreason:becauseweourselveshavethegreatestpossibledifficultyinaccountingforthefactstoberecorded.Suchastatementonourpartmayappearstrangetothereader.Howisanyonetotellastorywhichhecannotunderstandhimself?Inordertokeepclearofafalseposition,wehadperhapsbettergiveanexampleofwhatwemean;andprobablytheintelligentreaderwillsoonunderstandthedifficulty.Moreespeciallyareweinclinedtotakethiscoursesincetheexamplewillconstituteadistinctmarchforwardofourstory,andwillnothindertheprogressoftheeventsremainingtoberecorded.

           Duringthenextfortnightthatis,throughtheearlypartofJulythehistoryofourherowascirculatedintheformofstrange,diverting,mostunlikely-soundingstories,whichpassedfrommouthtomouth,throughthestreetsandvillasadjoiningthoseinhabitedbyLebedeff,Ptitsin,NastasiaPhilipovnaandtheEpanchins;infact,prettywellthroughthewholetownanditsenvirons.
