           ItwasthebeginningofJune,andforawholeweektheweatherinSt.Petersburghadbeenmagnificent.TheEpanchinshadaluxuriouscountry-houseatPavlofsk,[OneofthefashionablesummerresortsnearSt.Petersburg.]andtothisspotMrs.Epanchindeterminedtoproceedwithoutfurtherdelay.Inacoupleofdaysallwasready,andthefamilyhadlefttown.AdayortwoafterthisremovaltoPavlofsk,PrinceMuishkinarrivedinSt.PetersburgbythemorningtrainfromMoscow.Noonemethim;but,ashesteppedoutofthecarriage,hesuddenlybecameawareoftwostrangelyglowingeyesfixeduponhimfromamongthecrowdthatmetthetrain.Onendeavouringtore-discovertheeyes,andseetowhomtheybelonged,hecouldfindnothingtoguidehim.Itmusthavebeenahallucination.Butthedisagreeableimpressionremained,andwithoutthis,theprincewassadandthoughtfulalready,andseemedtobemuchpreoccupied.

           HiscabtookhimtoasmallandbadhotelneartheLitaynaya.Hereheengagedacoupleofrooms,darkandbadlyfurnished.Hewashedandchanged,andhurriedlyleftthehotelagain,asthoughanxioustowastenotime.AnyonewhonowsawhimforthefirsttimesinceheleftPetersburgwouldjudgethathehadimprovedvastlysofarashisexteriorwasconcerned.Hisclothescertainlywereverydifferent;theyweremorefashionable,perhapseventoomuchso,andanyoneinclinedtomockerymighthavefoundsomethingtosmileatinhisappearance.
